On 8 November, Tay Bac University held a national scientific conference on the theme “Northwest Viet Nam – Interdisciplinary Approaches”. It was attended by leaders of provincial departments and representatives of universities and colleges from across the country.

With the aim of broadening research directions, the conference focused on three main approaches: history, culture and ethnicity; literature, language and the arts; and geography, economics and education.

The organising committee received 79 papers from scientists at central research institutes, major universities nationwide and agencies in the Northwest region. The papers covered many fields, from the depths of historical and cultural heritage and distinctive features of literature and the arts to pressing current issues in education, the environment and tourism.

The conference chairs
Many outstanding papers addressed timely issues of the Northwest and Son La, such as: the Northwest as a geostrategic region in the resistance war against French colonialism and in today’s national construction and defence; the beauty of the Northwest in Vietnamese literature from folklore to modern times; Northwest cultural identity in the short stories of Kieu Duy Khanh; green tourism development in Son La from the case of Ngoc Chien, Muong La, amid global climate change; and ecological suitability assessment for the sustainable development of Arabica coffee in Son La.

Delegates listened to presentations of several representative studies with new, interdisciplinary approaches, and exchanged views and analyses on issues requiring attention in the Northwest, suggesting solutions for tourism development, environmental protection, cultural conservation and economic development based on the strengths of local areas.

A Tay Bac University student asks a question to a paper author
The conference was a prestigious scientific forum where researchers shared their views, passion for research and interdisciplinary approaches, bringing much useful information and fresh perspectives on the Northwest. The papers are expected to strengthen the link between scientific research and sustainable development and affirm the strategic role of the Northwest on Viet Nam’s economic, cultural and social map. The proceedings will be an important reference for the Northwest provinces in developing policies and solutions related to education in revolutionary traditions, improving the quality of ethnic minority human resources, protecting the environment and promoting sustainable livelihoods for ethnic communities, while inspiring future cooperation on Northwest-related topics.
